The Garter Girls Burly-Q Revue is a performance collective based in Calgary that found its inception in 2007; formerly named the Calgary Burlesque Collective. Rooted in the history of burlesque striptease, the collective strives to combine the wealth of years of this history with revival style new burlesque, bawdy comedy, beautiful spectacle, and perhaps a little irony. The performers of the Garter Girls bring diverse talents to the stage, drawing upon theatre, dance, visual art and performance art backgrounds to create a high quality show styled in a low-brow format. The performers constantly strive to redefine burlesque for themselves, pushing at the boundaries of the genre, while remaining aware of and connected to its past. The striptease form allows the performers to create an artifice of gender, exploring what it means to possess and perform the female body in conventional and non-conventional ways. In addition to regular shows with a corps of members, including Sugar Mae B., Miyuki Divine, Violet Rhapsody, Gardenia Rose, Axis D'Evil, and Roxie Floggings, the group continues to function as a collective by offering a featurette based program for anyone interested in performing with the Garter Girls. All types of performers and styles are welcome. The group is also available for benefit and charity performances, in keeping with their view of burlesque as a positive and accessible art form. |
